Sports Mailbox- 324-3001

Call after 1:00 p.m. each day to update game schedules, practices and cancellations for the youth sports program.

The goal of the youth sports programs is to enrich the lives of the youth of our community by building good health, character, morals and self-esteem.

Additionally, we offer quality and diversified programs to meet the interest of the community.

 Girls Volleyball will begin Saturday, September 6th at 9AM at the YMCA gymnasium. 

The NASP Youth Archery program will begin Wednesday, Spetmenber 17th at 530pm in the gymnasium at Faith Christian Academy.  The program will meet every Wednesday at 530pm at FCA.  Boys and girls in the 3rd through 12th grade are encouraged to participate.  Cost is $40 for new students and $10 for returning students.

 

 

Altavista Little League Baseball

Baseball is offered twice during the year, once in the spring and again in the fall. Registration for spring baseball is held in January and registration for fall baseball is held in June. Volunteer coaches are needed for all ages.  Contact the Sports Office for specific details about programs.


Spring Baseball

Spring baseball is offered to boys ages 5-12 years of age as of May 1st of the current year. The leagues break down as follows:
 

T- Ball, 5 and 6 year olds

Coach Pitch, 7 and 8 year olds

Minor AAA, 9 and 10 year olds

Majors, 11 and 12 year olds

T-Ball and Coach Pitch generally get started with practices around the end of March with the season concluding no later than mid-June.

The YMCA Sports Office provides each player in T-Ball and Coach Pitch with a hat and a jersey which they can keep at season’s end. Bats, balls and team helmets will be provided. Players may use their own helmets; however, they must have a properly-secured face mask attached.

Each player must have a glove in order to participate. With T-Ball and Coach Pitch, it is recommended that the glove be no bigger than 10 ½ inches. Check with the local sporting goods store for sizing.

Baseball pants and cleats are not required for T-Ball and Coach Pitch.

In the Altavista Little League, the sports office will provide each player with a team hat, and jersey. Players must have a glove, baseball pants (grey is preferred, however, check with your child’s coach first), rubber spiked cleats and an athletic supporter with cup. Glove size should be 11 to 11 ½ inches and should not be grey or white in color. Bats, balls and team helmets will be provided. Players may use their own helmets; however, they must have a properly-secured face mask attached. Additional rules regarding equipment can be found by contacting the sports office.
 

Fall Baseball

Two Fall baseball leagues are offered for:

Minors 

Boys ages 7 & 8 years of age as of May 1st of the current year. 

 Majors

Boys ages 9 – 11 years of age as of May 1st of the current year

Leagues interact locally, with Lynchburg Little League Fall Baseball as well as other area programs. The fall league is designed to be instructional. The league will begin around  mid August and conclude by early October.

A team hat and jersey will be provided as well as bats, balls and team helmets. Players may use their own helmets.


 

SOFTBALL

Softball is offered twice during the year, once in the spring and again in the fall. Registration for Spring Softball is held in January and Fall Softball in June. Volunteer coaches are needed for all age groups.  Contact the sports office for specific dates.


Spring Softball

Spring Softball is offered to girls ages 5-15 years of age as of May 1st of the current year. The leagues break down as follows:
 

Altavista Dixie Darlings Coach Pitch 7 & 8 year olds
Altavista Dixie Angels 9 & 10 year olds
Altavista Dixie Ponytails 11 & 12 year olds
Altavista Dixie Belles 13 - 15 year olds

In the Altavista Dixie Softball League, the sports office will provide each player with a team hat, jersey and socks. Players must have a glove, baseball pants (grey is preferred, however, check with your child’s coach first) and rubber spiked cleats.   Girls Volleyball

Girls Volleyball will be held in the fall begining after Labor Day Weekend.  It is open for girls ages 8-12.  The program will meet twice a week for approximately 6 weeks.  The program will be run similar to a camp with each session consisting of instruction and game time.  AHS Volleyball Coach, Debra Spencer and her staff will be assist with the program.

NASP Archery

National Archery in the Schools Program

The Altavista YMCA NASP program is for boys and girls in grades 3rd through 12th.  The group meets once a week and prior archery experience is not required.  All equipment is provided by the YMCA.  Contact the YMCA Sports Office for more information at 434-369-9622.


SOCCER

Soccer is offered twice during the year, once in the spring and again in the fall.
Registration for Spring Soccer is held in January and Fall Soccer in June. Contact the sports office for specific dates.  Boys and Girls leagues may be separated if participation numbers are adequate. Otherwise, leagues will be co-ed.  Volunteer coaches are needed for all programs.

Spring Soccer

Spring Soccer is for boys and girls ages 6-11 years of age as of August 1st, the previous year.

The age group breakdown is as follows:

U8     6 & 7 year olds
U10    8 & 9 year olds
U12   10 & 11 year olds

Typically our U8 and U10 teams participate in the Campbell County league and our U12 programs are a part of the Central Virginia Regional Soccer Association (CVRSA) www.lynchburgunited.com

The spring season begins around March 1st and concludes just before Memorial Day in May.

Most all matches are played on Saturday mornings and some travel is required to neighboring counties. All home matches are played at English Park (formerly known as Staunton River Park).

The YMCA Sports Office will provide players with a team jersey and socks. Each player must provide their own shin guards, and soccer cleats. Soccer cleats are different from other cleats in that they do not have a spike on the toe of the shoe. Check with the local sporting goods retailer or contact the sports office for additional assistance.

Fall Soccer

Fall Soccer is for boys and girls ages 4-14 years of age as of August 1st, the previous year.

The age group breakdown is as follows:

U6, U8, U10, U12, and U15

Registration for basketball is held in October. Basketball practices begin in December and games run through January and February. Volunteer coaches are needed for all programs.  Contact the sports office for specific dates.

Basketball is for boys and girls ages 5-12 years of age as of October 1st of the current year.

Boys and girls leagues will be separated starting at age 7 provided there are enough participants. Otherwise the leagues will be co-ed.

The age group breakdown is as follows:
 

5 & 6 year old Co-ed Rookie League
7 & 8 year old Girls Minor League
7 & 8 year old Boys Minor League
9 & 10 year old Girls NCAA League
9 & 10 year old Boys NCAA League
11 & 12 year old Girls Travel League
11 & 12 year old Boys Travel League

 The YMCA Sports Office will provide each participant with a team jersey. Sneakers with non-marking soles are required.
