Water aerobic classes are offered five days a week in the mornings and
evenings. The classes are friendly, fun and a great workout. Please refer to
the pool schedule for the dates and times of each class.
The three types of classes offered are as follows:
Low-impact -- these classes are for the first-time exercisers,
the older adult, or anyone who needs slower workouts. This class is
recommended for anyone with joint problems or back problems. This is an
excellent class if you have been released from physical therapy and your
doctor has recommended a water workout. Everyone works at their own pace,
with goals set. The class works on balance, flexibility, muscle strength
and cardio.
Shallow-water -- these classes are the next level of work-out.
Again each person works to the best of their abilities. Adults of all ages
are invited and the class works at many levels of cardio easy to intense.
Everyone also works on flexibility, muscle strength and balance.
Deep-water -- these classes are again for all ages teens to
seniors, who feel comfortable in deep water. No swimming required. While
this class also offers flexibility, muscle strength and cardio endurance,
it also includes a great abs workout. Because this class is in deeper
water, it is also low-impact and much easier on the joints.
Altavista Area YMCA instructors are certified with the Aquatic Exercise
Association. Instructors go to work shops, research material and train to
keep classes up-to-date with all the correct methods to work-out in a fun
and friendly atmosphere.
